  • Preview: The outlook for the 3A-12 tourney should end up coming down to a match-up between Bishop Verot and Dunbar as it has since this district was aligned with these three teams together a couple years back.  There is always that possibility for a team to pull a huge upset this time of the year, and if Cardinal Mooney is able to do so against Verot in the semifinals, then it may be the biggest upset of the district tournament week in SWFL.  They've lost both games to the Vikings this season by an average margin of 25 points, and in each game Verot did not need to play their starters past halftime.  So if it goes as expected, we will have another Verot-Dunbar final and it should be interesting.  Bishop Verot thrashed the Tigers on January 21st by nearly 30, 81-52, but then Dunbar turned around and used a zone defense to frustrate the Vikings and pulled out a 60-56 win.  The Tigers were up by as many as 18 in the second half against Verot, but the Vikings made a valiant comeback attempt that fell short.  Maybe the biggest key to the game is that it would be held at Dunbar, despite Mooney being the scheduled host.  Mooney has stated that if they are not in the final, then they have no interest in hosting it all the way through.  Now despite the fact that Dunbar hosting would seem like an advantage for the Tigers, this seasons results give evidence on the contrary.  Verot's big win came on the road, and it always seems like the Vikings play a little better on the road against the Tigers.  Dunbar was the favorite entering the season, with talented transfers galore and coming off a trip to the class 3A state final four, but has struggled to find an identity and rhythm as a group this year.  Verot on the other hand, has been together for a while, and their identity is similar to most years.  If they shoot it well, they will have a chance to win in any game, but if they don't, they may struggle due to their lack of overall size and athleticism in comparison to the past couple years.  Dunbar has more size with a front line that goes 6'11, 6'5, and 6'4 compared to one of 6'6, 6'2 and 6'4.  Not to mention that Dunbar is very athletic.  It will definitely be one to watch.
