SWFL Postseason 2009-10 ALL-SWFL Team

Mitch Woods, Community School (G, 6-foot-4, 195, Sr.)
  • 2009-10 Stats: 18.2 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 5.6 apg, 2.2 spg
  • Signed to Appalachian State
  • Chosen Preseason 2A 2nd Team All-State by Florida Hoops
  • 2009-10 Naples News Player of the Year
  • SWFL Hoops First Team All-SWFL in 2008-09
  • SWFL Hoops 2009-10 Preseason Player of the Year
  • Comments: The best way to sum up Mitch Woods is by saying that he flat out makes the players around him better with a high basketball IQ.  Coming into the season most expected Woods to need to put up gawdy offensive numbers for the Seahawks to be successful but he actually still averaged under 20 points, and did the work that does not show up on a stat sheet by handling constant double teams, and making defenses pay by always finding the open man.  In turn, the Seahawks won their fourth straight district tile and reached the Elite 8 for the fourth year in a row, all which Woods was a part of, and were only a few seconds away from returning to the 2A Final Four for the first time since Woods' sophomore season.  His aggressive and confidence has increased consistently over his high school career and Appalachian State will be getting a player who is physically and mentally ready to compete for playing time the moment he steps on campus.

Brunes Charles, Seacrest Country Day (G, 6-foot-2, 175, Sr.), Unsigned
  • 2009-10 Stats: 18.7 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 4.8 apg, 3.1 spg, 1.3 bpg
  • Notes: Chosen Preseason Class 1A 2nd Team All-State by Floridahoops.com; Led Seacrest to the Regional Finals and the first district title in school history.
  • Other awards: 2009-10 Naples News First-Team
  • Comments: In his final season, Charles was able to finally accomplish what he had sought out to do when he got to Seacrest a few years back. Win a District Championship.  Well, the Stingrays did not stop there, as they actually made a run at reaching the 1A Final Four, falling short in the Elite 8 to Summit Christian.  However, it was not at the fault of Charles' effort.  The super athletic and long guard did everything for his team this season, from rebounding, scoring, dishing the ball, stealing it from the opponents, and electrifying the crowd with his high flying dunks.  His progression skill wise over the past couple season is highly noticeable and his leadership skills are tremendous.  As of now, Brunes is still weighing his options for his college future but has had interest from schools at the Division 1 and 2 levels and whomever snags him up will get a great student-athlete with a ton of upside on the hardwood.

Kasey Wilson, North Port (F, 6-foot-7, 205, Jr.), committed to VCU
  • 2009-10 Stats: 20.5 ppg, 11.3 rpg, 3 bpg
  • Notes: Chosen Preseason Class 6A 2nd Team All-State by Floridahoops.com; Led North Port to the best record in school history at 21-4.
  • Other awards: 2009-10 Herald-Tribune Player of the Year
  • Comments: Wilson took it upon himself this season to fill the shoes of graduated senior and now South Florida guard Shaun Noriega, and he was great in the role of go-to-guy.  To average a double-double is nothing to be looked upon lightly, and he did it in a variety of ways.  Whether it was throwing down an emphatic dunk in traffic, scoring with a variety of post moves in the paint, or stepping out and showing off a soft touch from the perimeter, Wilson was often too much to handle for defenses on a nightly basis.  The junior will now look to continue increasing his skill set from the perimeter heading into his senior season, while also making an increased effort to become a more vocal leader for the Bobcats, in hopes of avenging an upset loss early in the district tournament which kept the team out of the postseason.  He has already verbally committed to Virginia Commonwealth University so with that pressure off his shoulders, he can fully focus on improving his game to help his team get back into the playoffs before he graduates.

Nick Goshay, Charlotte (SF, 6-foot-4, 215, Sr.), Preferred Walk-On FGCU
  • 2009-10 Stats: 19 ppg, 10 rpg
  • Notes: Led Charlotte to a 25-4 record after going just 13-13 last year.  Ended his career with 20 pts and 11 rebounds in a 42-37 Regional Semifinal loss to eventual 5A State Runner-Up Sickles.
  • Other awards: 2009-10 Charlotte Sun-Herald Player of the Year
  • Comments: Goshay paid his dues and played his role on teams stacked with big time talent in his first couple years at Charlotte such as Dago Pena (Marshall), Chris Stephenson (UNC-Asheville), and Timmy Snyder (Hillsborough CC).  However once they were gone, it was his team and his time to take over.  In his senior season, he was the consumate teammate, deferring to talented guys around him when they were doing well, but also taking over games when needed.  He averaged around 19 points a game and 10 rebounds but the stats do not tell you just how good he was even when he did not put up huge numbers, although he did have his share of big nights.  He helped take Charlotte from a .500 season in his junior year, to 25-4 this season, being ranked as high as #2 in class 5A during the season.  Nick has chosen to continue his basketball career as a preferred walk-on at Florida Gulf Coast University next season.

Terran McClendon, Fort Myers (G, 6-foot-1, 170, Sr.), Unsigned
  • 2009-10 Stats: 11.1 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 3.3 apg, 3.1 spg
  • Notes: Class 4A State Final game MVP scoring 20 points in helping the Green Wave win the first State Title in Lee County history
  • Other awards: 2009-10 News-Press First-Team
  • Comments: Arguably the best on-ball defender in the area this season, Terran or "Buddy" as everyone calls him, came into every game with the motivation of shutting down the opposing team's best offensive guard/wing player.  However, the defense was not very new to Buddy, but the increased role on the offensive end was.  This season he was asked to play more time at the point guard position, and to step up his game all-around offensively, and he answered.  The perfect example of that was in the State Championship game where he went off for 20 points, while also handling the ball under pressure the majority of the time down the stretch to help seal the win.  McClendon is still considering his options for college, and will make a decision soon as to where he will play collegiate basketball next season.

Jordan Leach, Naples (G, 6-foot, 155, Sr.)
  • 2009-10 Stats: 19.7 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 3.0 apg, 2.8 spg
  • Notes: Led his team to the 4A-12 District Championship and to their first playoff appearance since 2002.
  • Other awards: 2009-10 Naples News First-Team
  • Comments: Leach put up big stats across the board and on a consistent basis, in many situations put the Golden Eagles on his back.  Naples finished with their best season since 2002, including defeating Golden Gate in the district title game.  Outside of the Fort Myers game, where fellow All-SWFL 1st teamer Terran McClendon and a lot of good team defense got the best of him, holding him to just 5 points, he came up big in big games no matter what defenses did to slow him down.  According to his family, Jordan has decided to attend the University of Florida and will hope to join Barron Collier 2009 graduate, Brian Landers, who was able to make the practice squad with UF last season.

Evin Graham, Fort Myers (G, 6-foot-4, 175, Jr.), Unsigned
  • 2009-10 Stats: 13.7 ppg, 4.6 apg, 4.3 rpg, 2.5 spg
  • Notes: Chosen Preseason Class 4A 1st Team All-State by Floridahoops.com, Leading scorer for the Class 4A State Champions and a 28-5 record
  • 2009-10 News-Press Player of the Year
  • Comments: Graham came into his own this season as a player and as a leader.  To be the starting point guard and leading scorer on a State Championship basketball team as a junior says a lot about his maturity and skill level.  The long and smooth guard is unselfish while also showing the ability to take over games by scoring the ball when called upon.  One big notch in his belt this season outside of the state title was helping the Green Wave get through the always extremely tough City of Palms Classic with two wins against national level competition.  The Wave increased their strength of schedule a ton this season in hopes of building towards making a title run, and it paid off as Graham was matched up against some of the top players in the state and relished in the role.  Heading into his senior season, he will most likely have an ever more increased scoring role with the loss of 5 key seniors, and with his work ethic and mental toughness he will more than likely keep the Wave's winning ways at a premium in hopes of defending their 4A State Championship in 2010-11.  On the recruiting side of things, Graham currently holds scholarship offers from a few Division 1 schools including Georgia Southern, High Point, and The Citadel that we know of for sure and is receiving heavy interest from multiple others with offers most likely coming in the near future.
