Charlotte High senior Nick Goshay has been playing great this year and Saturday at the Wally Keller Classic was just another day at the office, albeit with the opportunity to do it against one of Florida's best teams, in 6A defending State Champ Coral Reef. Well, Goshay dropped in 9 points and 11 rebounds in the first quarter, on his way to 19 points and 19 rebounds for the game, as SWFL Hoops top team improved to 16-1 with the 68-52 convincing win. Charlotte is ranked #2 in Class 5A in the latest FSWA State Polls.
Our second ranked team and the current #1 team in Class 4A in Florida, Fort Myers, needed overtime to pull out a 73-62 statement win of their own against Ft. Lauderdale University, who took the state's #2 ranked 4A team, Miami Norland, to double OT on Friday night. Green Wave junior guard Evin Graham led the way with 19 points.
In the only other win for a local team over an out of area squad, #5 North Port (15-1) avenged last year's Regional Quarterfinal loss to Boca Ciega by edging the Pirates 46-44 thanks to a late three-pointer by sophomore Larry Taylor, and 15 points from 6'6 junior forward Kasey Wilson. Not to be left out, the Bobcats got a huge assist from junior point guard Eric Litvin, as he largely responsible for holding Boca Ciega guard Kenneth Smith to just 3 points in the second half, after he scored 10 during the first half.
Of the other local teams in action, Lemon Bay was not able to hold a lead late against Melbourne, and lost 47-45, while playing without senior center Matt Maier and junior guard Dan Wojcik due to injury.
In the night cap Port Charlotte took P.K. Yonge to the wire, but fell just short, losing 59-56 despite 17 and 13 points respectively from seniors Dylan Baermann and Chad Lawrence.
