Notes: When you first see Clay no doubt his frame stands out that he must be a football kid, and with good reason because he is a standout on the defensive side of the ball for the Indians football team. At 6'4 and around 220 pounds of muscle he has already passed his older brother Trey in stature. Trey is headed to Univ. of Florida to play quarterback once he graduates early next December. Clay though is similar to his brother in that he excels on both the gridiron and the hardwood. When on the court he has the bulk and athleticism to mix it up inside with bigger players, along with the discipline and basketball IQ to know how to use position to gain the advantage on the glass and defensively. He moves extremely well for a thicker guy and will surprise you with how well he can knock down shots as far out as beyond the arc. Good form and an athletic release make him a guy that can definitely pull slower post players away from the bucket and take advantage from deep or when needed, put it on the floor and get by them for the layup. The main areas needing some improvement if Clay wanted to opt for a career in college with the roundball instead of the pigskin would be his ballhandling to become more of a wing prospect and lateral quickness which would allow him to guard athletic wings consistently. At 6'4 or 6'5, if he did not grow any more, would mean his future would need to be as a perimeter guy who has the ability to mix it up inside, but as a post he would just be really undersized to be a higher level potential guy. For now though, as all young guys should do, he should just continue to focus on his strengths in games, but always look to improve the other areas until he's comfortablt using them in game situations as well. Look for Burton, along with junior Justin Grant, to lead the Indians in their quest to build on a 27-4 record this year despite losing 3 key guys.
