June 30, 2009

Well they are long over due but the 2008-09 Florida All-State Boy's Basketball teams have been announced with eight local guys making the cut.  There was a representative in all but two of the six classes, with North Port senior guard Shaun Noriega on the 3rd team in Class 5A, Bishop Verot senior guard Brennen Melvin on the 2nd team in 3A, Bishop Verot senior forward Etienne Effenberg and Dunbar sophomore guard Darius Perkins on the 3rd team in 3A, Community School junior guard Mitch Woods and Evangelical Christian School senior center Joel Vander Pol on the 3rd team in 2A, Bradenton Christian junior forward Michael Frey on the 2nd team in 1A, and Sarasota Christian senior forward Mark DuBois on the 3rd team in 1A.

Last season there were more lofty awards locally handed out in terms of more guys on the first team including Desoto's Shavon Shine, Charlotte's Dago Pena, and Community School's Kyle Petersen.  Petersen was also the recipient of the Class 2A Player of the Year award and was then a finalist for Florida's coveted Mr. Basketball award.  There were no first teamers in this year's bunch but with at least one team in five of the six class's Elite 8's, and two state Final 4 finishers, the area should be more than proud that our team's were very successful and Southwest Florida was well represented as a group.

Of the All-State selections, all of the seniors are ready to take the next step in their basketball careers at the collegiate level.  Noriega, Vander Pol, Melvin, and Effenberg have plans at the Division 1 level.  Noriega received a full scholarship to play for the University of South Florida in Tampa, Vander Pol got a full ride to Liberty University if Virginia, Melvin got a full ride to Fordham University in New York, and Effenberg will be a preferred walk-on at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.  Mark DuBois accepted a full scholarship offer to play for Coker College in South Carolina, a NCAA Division 2 university.  Of the underclassmen selected, Woods and Perkins have already received offers from NCAA Division 1 schools.
