SWFL Hoops: What were the 8 factors on your list?

Kasey: Relationship with the coaching staff, atmosphere, location, impact I could have, potential to play after college, NCAA tourney potential, best overall fit, and education

SWFL Hoops: What was it that made you decide your college future early?

Kasey: When I did the list and it weighed out so unevenly I knew it was the right fit. And my heart was set there.

SWFL Hoops: When did you visit the VCU campus?

Kasey: Early February

SWFL Hoops: What other schools did you visit?

Kasey: Ohio, Georgia, and Florida Atlantic

SWFL Hoops: What position does VCU see you playing for them?

Kasey: Skilled power forward

SWFL Hoops: How did VCU originally find out about you?

Kasey: Through the internet

SWFL Hoops: When did they first start recruiting you?

Kasey: They called right before this past July

SWFL Hoops: When did VCU officially offer you a scholarship?

Kasey: This past summer after an AAU game they saw me play in at a tournament in Myrtle Beach.

SWFL Hoops: What do you still want to improve on skill wise the most?

Kasey: There's not one thing.  Defense, ball handling, jumpshot, and be a better teammate are all things I'm looking to improve this offseason.

SWFL Hoops: How much has Coach (Curt) Allen helped you as a person and player?

Kasey: Coach Allen has helped me mature a lot on and off the floor.  Off the court, he never tells me what to do, he just tells me things I need to consider when making decisions.  He also has helped me become a better student, while getting me involved doing positive things in the community.  On the court, he has developed my game from just a post player to a skilled 4 man and evaluates and strengthens my weaknesses.

SWFL Hoops: Who else has been the most important in your development on and off the court.

Kasey: My parents because they know me best and they fly me all over to help me, and they are straight forward with me. They contact coaches and they always were here for me in the process on and off the floor.  Conrad Foss who is the main man at Florida Elite, because he has alot belief in me and is straight forward. Also, Shaun noriega because we talk often and he kind of mentors me and tells me what I need to do to get it done. That means alot coming from a player in the big east.  And my principal Dr George Kenney, who has really taken an interst in me and has pushed me to be the best I can be and do the right things.

SWFL Hoops: Thanks Kasey for your time, congratulations, and good luck next season and then at VCU.

Kasey: Thank you, and thanks for everything you guys have done for SWFL basketball.
North Port High School 6'6 junior forward Kasey Wilson, currently ranked the #1 player in SWFLHoops.com's class of 2011, is not a big list maker on a day to day basis.  On Sunday evening however, after returning home from an unofficial visit to Ohio University, Wilson had a lot going through his mind and so he sat down and made a list of 8 things.  Those 8 items represented what he regarded as the most important  factors that would weigh into where he would decide to play college basketball and spend four years after graduating high school.  He then used the list to compare Ohio University and Virginia Commonwealth University, the two schools who had offered him full athletic scholarships thus far, and marked down which school was able to satisfy each factor more.  When he was finished with the list, VCU fulfilled 6 of his 8 factors better and that just verified what Wilson was already feeling, that he felt at home in Virigina, so he made the call and committed to Virginia Commonwealth.  Wilson is originally from Ohio, and moved to Florida in the 6th grade, just a week before Hurricane Charley swept through Charlotte County.  He chose VCU over an offer from Ohio and heavy interest from Florida Atlantic, Georgia, Fairfield, and Syracuse. VCU plays out of the Colonial Athletic Association and has been to the NCAA tournament 3 of the past 6 seasons. This however is the first season at VCU for head coach Shaka Smart, who is a former University of Florida assistant coach under Billy Donovan.  Wilson averaged 20 points, 12 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game this season for the Bobcats, while leading them to a school-best 21-4 record.  North Port was upset in the district tournament though, and so Wilson will be that much more motivated to win his first district championship next season. We spoke to Wilson on Sunday evening about his commitment and the recruiting process and we've listed a few of the questions and answers below.  Congratulations to Kasey and his family.
